Running After Covid

Two weeks before my next race, the JFK 50-Mile, Friday after work, I noticed a small tickle in the back of my throat. Thinking I was coming down with a cold I took appropriate measures to avoid it. The next morning I was down and out. Sunday I was pretty sure I had Covid again so I went to urgent care and got the latest treatment. Three days later I was starting to feel better.

Obviously, I was quite worried about how this was going to impact my training and my race. I missed a solid build week of training and will probably take it easy the week leading up to the race on Saturday. My coach says I have the foundation work done so I should be ‘fine’. I had hoped to try for a really solid time but now the plan is to stay consistent, run steady throughout the race, and be happy with whatever time I can manage.

I went for my first run post-sickness yesterday, dreading how I was going to feel. It turned out to be a great run. I ran at an easy pace for an hour and felt great. I wasn’t wiped out when I finished and feel like I could do it again today. That’s a truly positive result after being on the couch not wanting to move just a week ago. Although I’m not going to be 100%, I’m optimistic about JFK on the 18th!

Stay tuned for the post-race report. You can use the RaceJoy app to follow my progress during the race. I’m bib #225.
